I heard a story once - I can’t recall where, but it stuck with me. A woman at the airport, after washing her hands in the restroom, takes a paper towel and wipes away the water drops around the sink she had made. Another woman looks at her, surprised. She simply replies: “I decided long ago to leave every place I visit a little better than I found it.” And truly, that’s how life works - we are constantly leaving traces behind.
In forensics, there is a principle called Locard’s Exchange Principle. It’s very simple: whenever we enter, touch, or leave a place, we always leave something behind or take something with us. No one can come and go without leaving a trace.
Business is no different. Every interaction we have leaves a trace, on people, on culture, and on results. There are no neutral interactions, because every moment is an opportunity to build trust… or to break it. Do we leave behind calm and trust, or stress and uncertainty? That is the “fingerprint” we leave on the minds and hearts of our employees. That fingerprint defines who we are as leaders.
My benchmark for that human trace was set by one person, the owner of a company I once worked for. He wasn’t present every day, but he left an unforgettable impact. His presence brought calm into any room, even in the most stressful moments. After speaking with him, the feeling was like waking up on a beach after a perfect nap - rested, safe, and at peace. He became my reference point for everything that came after. That is the essence of Locard’s principle, he retired, I left the company, but I carried a part of him with me.
It’s not always fair to compare, but it is valuable to have a standard. He gave me exactly that. He was, first and foremost, a human being - and only then a business owner, a manager, a leader. That is what I will remember for the rest of my life, the feeling he brought into every interaction, and the trace that remained long after he left the room.
Today, whenever I enter a new interaction, I think of Locard’s principle. I am aware that I will leave something behind. I strive to make sure that trace brings peace, not unrest. To leave the room better than I found it.
